Explore and Discover in a Supportive Environment

Middle school is one of the most transitional times in a student’s academic career. Leaving the close support and security of elementary school and entering an educational arena that is the precursor to high school comes with a host of challenges that can make or break a student’s middle school experience. Knox Middle School provides a soft landing and safe space for our young learners to explore, discover, and cultivate new interests with friends from around the world – which sets the stage for their success in our college preparatory high school and beyond.

Our
Student-Centered
Approach

Challenging Curriculum that Incorporates Life Skills

The Knox Middle School curriculum is thoughtfully designed to reflect our Knox Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Courage, Kindness, and Scholarship, which are the foundations that support everything our students do here at Knox from the classroom to the playing fields to the stage.

Serving students in grades 6-8, our program offers a comprehensive range of core classes in English, Science, History, and Math, that in addition to incorporating our Core Values, often include our campus as our classroom.

  • Sunny days on our beautiful, open campus allow for student Literature Circles to bring their discussions out into nature, and for our Science classes to explore the many classifications of plant and animal life that make their homes on our campus
  • With the shores of Stony Brook Harbor as part of our campus, students get up close and personal with Life Sciences and Marine Biology
  • Hands-on cooperative projects allow students to share opinions and ideas about historical events
  • Our Equestrian Center gives our middle-schoolers – even those who don’t ride – the opportunity for personal experiences around animal care and barn management

In alignment with the Knox Mission – which is to provide the opportunity for capable students to excel within a liberal arts program infused with artistic and athletic pursuits to prepare for higher education at selective colleges and universities – the Arts and World Languages are another critical component of the Knox Middle School experience.

  • Students don’t simply engage in visual and performing arts classes – they take their talents on the road and perform for their peers in various independent schools in Manhattan
  • Part of World Language studies in our Knox Middle School involves students taking their language skills into the real world with trips to authentic restaurants and cultural attractions, where only the learned second language is spoken

Additionally, our STEM and life skills classes equip students for the demands of a rapidly changing world, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and practical skills. This holistic approach ensures that every student at Knox Middle School not only gains academic knowledge but also develops the essential skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

With a diverse student body that includes peers from neighboring towns and countries across the globe, our students learn from one another’s experiences and perspectives, enhancing their educational journey and promoting a sense of belonging that empowers them to succeed.

Extracurricular Programs

With Knox Middle School, the discovery doesn’t stop when classes end. Our after-school programs open doors to a world of new interests and passions, where students can explore their creativity, build their skills, and connect with friends. From creative arts to STEM exploration, our clubs inspire young minds through activities in music, history, technology, and more, allowing students to dive into subjects they love and unlock potential they didn’t know they had.

For our young athletes, Knox offers an array of sports teams where students can learn teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. For those who prefer to stay active without the competitive edge, our intramural programs — like yoga, badminton, and running — provide fun, engaging activities that keep both body and mind sharp. In every activity, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, try new things, and support each other in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Knox Middle School also offers leadership opportunities that empower middle schoolers to make a difference in their community. Whether through our student council, ambassador program, or other initiatives, Knox students learn what it means to lead with compassion, responsibility, and respect. With so many ways to explore and grow, after-school hours at Knox are filled with excitement, friendship, and discovery—helping every student find what makes them shine.

Support for Learning

At Knox Middle School, we believe that learning extends beyond academics—it’s about nurturing the growth of the whole child. Our programs are designed to support each student’s unique strengths, helping them thrive in a caring, inclusive environment. Through a comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum led by our licensed mental health counselor, students develop essential skills in managing emotions, building positive relationships, and deepening self-awareness. This curriculum empowers them to approach challenges with resilience and empathy, laying a strong foundation for lifelong well-being and personal growth.

Our Advisory Program is a pillar of support, offering each student a small, family-like environment where they can find guidance and encouragement for their academic, personal, and social growth. Advisors are mentors, role models, and a source of steady support, helping students navigate their middle school years with confidence. Through this program, we aim to build a sense of belonging and connection that supports both individual and group growth.

For students who need additional learning support, we offer tailored services to meet diverse needs. Our English as a New Language (ENL) program helps non-native speakers strengthen their language skills, while our BOOST program provides targeted academic support for students who need more assistance beyond the core curriculum. Together, these programs ensure that each student has the resources, encouragement, and community they need to flourish at Knox.
